Football World Cup’s Biggest Upsets

Switzerland scored 2010 World Cup’s biggest upset when they defeated hot favourites Spain by a single goal by Gelson Fernandes. Fernandes himself was surprised as he netted the goal from a close range past goalie Iker Cassilas and defender Gerard Pique. The big loss of Catalans underscores the fact that the game is highly unpredictable and that even the best squad is vulnerable to defeats.We also saw the mighty Spanish armada giving up before the little known Swiss army. France, Italy and even the indomitable Argentinians have met with such disastrous defeats before. Here’s a look at biggest upsets of World Cup history.


                                SENEGAL TOPPLES  FRANCE  1-0

 Senegal, a little country located in West Africa was no match for the mighty France – the 1998 World Champions. France had a league of first class players like Zidane, Henry, Viera and all. A lesser-known Papa Bouba Diop’s shot pierced right through the heart of the French army, Senegal made history, and France was shown the exit doors.




                             SOUTH KOREA BEATS ITALY 2-1

Remember the 2002 World Cup that witnessed the rise of Asian power? 3-time world champions Italy were facing Korean Republic in the second round. Striker Christian Vieri gave Italy an early lead scoring in the 18th minute (his 9th goal in WC). As the Italians were about to win the match, Seol Ki-Hyeon scored an equaliser stretching the game to extra time. During the extra time Ahn Jung-Hwan scored the golden goal sending off the Azurris.
  


                                       CAMEROON DEFEATS  ARGENTINA 2-1
Diego Maradona’s Argentina too got a real shock during the 1990 World Cup when Roger Milla’s Cameroon defeated them 1-0 in the opening game of the 1990 finals in Italy. Argentina later survived the shock and reached the finals where they eventually lost to Lother Matheus’s German squad.

NORTH KOREA DEFEATS ITALY 1-0

Italy’s Korean jinx can be traced back to history. If it was South Korea in 2002, it was North Korea way back in 1966. Then North Korea stormed past Italy to reach the quarter finals. Their World Cup anthem – “We can beat everyone, even the strongest team,” proved them right during that WC.

 

NIGERIA DEFEATS SPAIN 3-2

In 2010, it was Switzerland; and in 1998, it was Nigeria. Spain suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Nigerian squad who edged past them 3 goals to 2 then.

      What’s unique about  Argentine beauty Gabriela Sabatini? Her brunette hair or appealing smile? She took the world by storm when she beat the then world # 1 Steffi Graf in the finals of the 1990 US Open. That was the only Grand Slam crown she’s ever won in her career, but managed to grab a slew of endorsements. Gaby even has her own line of perfume!

      There is no match for Steffi when it comes to grace and genius. She was the true queen of tennis who never got carried away by any distractions. The game always remained her top priority; still the leggy German blonde was hailed for her amazing figure, too.

On popular demand, I’m adding Monica Seles too to the list. Seles was my favourite player! With her pixie hairdo and smile, Monica posed a big challenge to Steffi Graf. At 16, she won the French Open, becoming the youngest ever to win the title. She went on to win 8 Grand Slams in her teens, but her career came to a halt when she got stabbed by a ‘crazy’ fan of Steffi Graf – Gunter Parche. Though her wound wasn’t fatal, it affected her mentally and Seles became a shadow of her old self. However, she made a great comeback winning the Australian Open in 1996.

          Tennis’s original glam girl Chris Evert is often regarded the diva of ’70s. Coupled with brilliance and talent, she has to her credit 18 Grand Slams altogether. Her haircut was immensely copied by women around the world then.

       Sexy, graceful and suave…French lady Mary Pierce had it all! Remember her ‘French braids’? She can also be regarded as a trend-setter. Mary was popular among non-tennis fans too. Back then in the ’90s, photographers never used to miss a chance to get a perfect ‘Mary Pierce’ shot!

     Anna’s name is synonymous with glamour. She was only 16 when she reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1997, and took the world by storm with her sex-appeal. She never made it beyond that, but her career took a different course and she got approached by fashion magazines and agencies. Anna has officially retired from tennis but still plays charity matches.

      What Anna lacked, Martina Hingis had. Hingis won several Grand Slams in her teens, but recurring injuries cut short her career. Hingis had great charm and a captivating smile!

       Daniela Hantuchova’s innocent looks and slim figure caught the world’s fancy. She too has never won a Grand Slam in her career, yet has a huge fan following on the tennis court and off it.

      Sania Mirza has fans all around the world. Her marriage might have cut short what seemed to be a promising career on the tennis court, but this Hyderabad lass still has the sub-continent swooning at her feet.

     Unlike her compatriot Anna, Maria has game. Standing tall at 6 ft 4 inches, this lissome lass is a trend-setter when it comes to the game and outfits. She has a best-selling perfume named after her. This leggy blonde once made news when she turned up in a tux on court.

     There are many things that make Ana Ivanovic lovable. Her aggressiveness on court contradicts her stunning looks. She could very well be tennis’s supermodel.

Maria Kirilenko is another promising Russian beauty who is a favourite with photographers. Slender, with an enigmatic smile, she is pretty conscious when it comes to fashion. She was featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Need we say more?

Magnificent Landscape South-West of Kunming in Yunnan

South-West of Kunming in Yunnan

A place in south west of Kunming, Capital city of Yunnan Province. Because of remoteness and lack of infra structure and lodging etc. This place is not listed in the tourist map of China. The red land of the eastern river is a place where one almost can not find it in China's tourist maps. Even if  there is, it has only a few words to introduce it. It is located in the southwestern part of KUNMING, 2600 ft. above sea level, a remote area.  Because of its lack of infrastructure, transportation problem, inadequate lodging facilities.   Ordinary travel agency would not think of going there.  Even the people living there are not so aware or familiar with its existing beauty. But for those who have seen the pictures of the Red land , no one can resist being attracted to its beautiful scenery! Just like a painting of a great magnificent landscape. Because the soil contains such components as oxidized Iron, etc kind of metallic minerals. after a long period of oxidation , gradually added and mixed in the soil that produced this extra-ordinary reddish brown soil. Here in this place, Mountains and hills , every inch of land are cultivated and planted to the maximum by the inhabitants, Consequently causing unwanted damage to the place... erosion. Just like Taiwan, How long could this magnificent phenomenon exist? We do not know. That's why there is an advocacy of returning to forestry. Dongchuan Red Land represents Yunnan mountain valley  most attractive colors.  Excursion is the soul's relaxation and banquet.  Multicolor Waves----five, six kinds of color mountains look like multicolor waves, so magnificent. Crops on the Red Land such as ; potatoes, oats, corn, oil flower vegetables, Different color crops so arranged , when looking from afar it seems like God painted them on a cloth so full of gorgeous color.    Each family was distributed with different size and shape of land, Each has its own preference kinds of crops. That caused and produced this beautiful pieces of colors. During harvest time, the soil is shoveled up and makes this unusually red color.  I like the countryside farms' scenery.    In September , white color oil flowers are in bloom on the whole mountain, It is a pity they covered up the beautiful red color. The best time for sightseeing tour is middle of  November .  The whole mountain is like covering with a beautiful colored cloth. How I wish to lie down enjoying the breeze and looking at the ever-changing clouds in the sky.      Early in the morning, donkey-ridden cart full of harvest transporting to the town, while a few of the children walking toward the different direction to school.          A melody kind of view.         Different seasons, different time, different sunlight, produce different kind of colors.           Just like a mixing colors plate so  bright and splendid.     "Sunset is so beautiful but it is almost dark" The most dazzling color is before the sun sets.      Rare opportunity to see the burning clouds, I set up my camera and got it. Bad temper donkey did not want to work with the bull , such uncoordinated working force., This is the first time I saw such kind of farming method and wondered why.      The poorer farmer used horse to take the place of donkey. later I knew that since different kinds of animals had different temperaments, they were used together to control each other. If one of them refused to move, the other one would force it.  That is to increase production. I think such ancient method could only be seen here only.  Good kid helping to harvest vegetables to bring home before sunset.         Clear sky with a rainbow after the rain.   This hollowed place is the most distinct part of the land. Later , in order to promote tourism it was named  Lexiaguo ( meaning--- the place where beautiful colors set)      A town in Lexiaguo.  Lexiaguo is full of crops that its curves and lines were made so beautiful by the sunlight.      The curve-like crops' lines enhanced more clearly by the red soil.    In life, sometimes we do not need to ask ourselves so many Whys', just do what you think you want to do ---------------Thanks for your patience... hope you enjoyed these pictures.
